VinFast has quietly pulled off one of India’s biggest surprises in the electric vehicle market. Just months after launching local operations, the Vietnamese EV maker has surpassed major brands like Hyundai and Kia to become the country’s fourth-largest seller of electric vehicles.
Based on vehicle registration data from late December 2025, VinFast’s rapid rise shows how quickly the brand has bonded with Indian customers. VinFast has disrupted a market dominated by well-known Indian and South Korean carmakers by combining reasonable prices, new features, and locally produced electric SUVs.
Overtaking Major Rivals
According to the latest VAHAN registration data, VinFast recorded 321 battery-powered vehicle sales in December, moving it ahead of Kia’s 272 units and Hyundai’s 238 units. While Tata Motors still leads the market with over 5,000 sales, VinFast’s jump to the fourth spot is impressive because it only started selling cars in India earlier this year. This performance has placed the brand directly behind the “top three” of Tata, MG, and Mahindra.
Local Assembly Strategy
A lot of this momentum comes down to VinFast building cars locally at its new plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Local production of the VF6 and VF7 helps VinFast avoid heavy import duties and keep prices competitive. The VF6 starts at roughly ₹16.49 lakh, which puts it in direct competition with popular zero-emission SUVs like the Tata Nexon and MG ZS.
Growing Charging Network
To support its new drivers, VinFast’s charging arm, V-Green, just signed a massive deal with HPCL to set up electric charging stations at fuel pumps across the country. This partnership aims to use HPCL’s 24,000 locations to build a reliable plug-in network for both city and highway travel. This move is designed to make owning a battery-operated vehicle much easier by ensuring a charger is always nearby.
| Company | Dec EV Sales | Market Rank |
| Tata Motors | 5,231 Units | 1st |
| JSW MG Motor | 3,054 Units | 2nd |
| Mahindra | 2,600 Units | 3rd |
| VinFast | 321 Units | 4th |
| Kia India | 272 Units | 5th |
Premium Tech Features
The VF6 and VF7 models are packed with high-end tech, including Level 2 ADAS safety systems and large 12.9-inch touchscreens. Inside, these zero-emission SUVs keep things clean and uncluttered. There are no old-school gauges or bulky dashboards. Key details like speed and navigation are projected onto a head-up display instead. That simple, tech-first approach gives the cabin a futuristic vibe and helps the brand stand apart in a very crowded EV space.
Future Market Plans
VinFast is already preparing to launch affordable models, like the VF3 micro-SUV, which could start at under ₹10 lakh in 2026. The company is also looking to use its Indian factory as an export hub to send battery-operated cars to other countries. As the brand continues to open more showrooms, it is expected to keep putting pressure on well-known carmakers to lower their prices and update their electric technology.
