Skoda is planning to launch its first electric car in India between 2027 and 2028 to allow time for local supplier development and charging infrastructure growth.
Skoda Auto India, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is waiting until the years 2027-2028 to enter the fast-growing Indian EV market. This long, cautious strategy allows for the development of an essential local supplier base and for the possibility of better charging infrastructure and stable policy. The company is already examining its worldwide portfolio for the Indian release.
Future EV Confirmed
Skoda Auto India, along with the Volkswagen group, has confirmed its entry into the upcoming market of electric car in India. This is in keeping with the global direction taken in electrification, but the company, as indicated above, is taking a very slow, long-term approach to its position. The name of the model and the potentially wide price range have yet to be revealed to the public.
India EV Timeline
The company plans to introduce the EV in India between 2027 and 2028. That is a very deliberate timeframe that has been set after much strategic forecasting evaluation of the groundwork to be laid for a successful launch and localised manufacturing. The delay has to be attributed; Skoda intends first to confirm local suppliers throughout India. As Skoda Auto India’s brand director, Ashis Gupta, points out, time is required to develop that network in India, which is essential for driving down costs of building and thereby allowing the development of price-competitive models.
Market Growth Factor
The company believes that the market and infrastructure take time to mature. The current electric car industry in India accounts for only about 10% to 12% of the total segment. By 2027-28, Skoda expects to have a more conducive policy framework and significantly advanced public charging infrastructure.
Current Sales Data
There are currently four models available in India: three sedans and a small SUV. The small SUV model has contributed considerably to the elevation of Skoda’s market share. The table below summarises the company’s recent sales performance:
| Metric | Detail |
| Market Share (Volume) | 1.7% |
| Units Sold (Jan – Sep 2025) | 53,000 units |
| Current Models | Kylaq, Slavia, Kushaq, and Kodiac |
In preparation for future growth, including the eventual conversion to EVs, Skoda is currently expanding its retail network. Now, the company has 315 customer touchpoints in India and plans to expand this number of touchpoints to 350 by 2025, mainly targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
