BYD files patents for variable flux motors to boost electric efficiency at all speeds, solving high-speed energy loss in EVs.
BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle leader, recently disclosed four patents for Variable Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors to boost EV efficiency. These patents solve the technical conflict between low-speed torque and high-speed energy saving. By dynamically adjusting magnetic flux, BYD’s upcoming high-performance electric models will achieve better highway range and smoother performance worldwide.
Solving Efficiency Gaps
Standard electric motors often struggle to stay efficient at both slow and fast speeds. The new BYD design includes a “variable flux” system, which modifies the magnetic field strength of the motor while the vehicle is in operation. This permits the car to have a strong initial push at the start and to use high power on highways. The motor becomes cooler through the magnet changing, which leads to a reduction of energy loss and further smartness in the electric drive system.
Key Technical Features
The patents introduce a unique rotor configuration capable of altering its magnetic characteristics. This facilitates the complete reversal of “back electromotive force” at high speeds, which otherwise would be a factor holding back the speed of electric cars and exhausting the battery faster. The new technology guarantees that the motor does not lose power when the car is going fast, resulting in a more pleasant and quieter electric driving experience.
| Feature | Electric Benefit |
| Variable Flux | Adjusts magnets to save electric energy. |
| High-Speed Cooling | Reduces internal heat during fast electric travel. |
| Extended Range | Higher efficiency leads to more electric miles. |
| Compact Design | A smaller motor size leaves more room for EV batteries. |
Better Driving Range
This technology is expected to directly improve the driving range of future electric cars. By smartly managing the power, the Chinese carmaker hopes that every battery not only can last longer but will also travel a further distance. Because of the lower heat output of the motor, the cooling system can operate less intensively. Commuters can now easily choose long-distance electric travel.
Market Impact Plans
The company intends to incorporate these motors in its upcoming releases of exclusive and fast electric cars. As industry leaders, we’re delivering top speed without the weight of bulky, oversized batteries. The company is committed to making electric components more reliable and efficient so as to compete with the pace of global electric vehicle adoption.
